Hi Rae, we designed our system to avoid the motor cortex particularly because it is designed for able bodied users. Motor imagery is most appropriate for supporting users with paralysis of some kind, where the motor cortex is no longer effective for direct control of limb movements etc.
Emotiv’s algorithms use the brain patterns displayed by the user during the training sessions, which provide the freedom for the user to choose whatever mental patterns they can reliably reproduce.
